Nia Pearl grew up in Umtata in the Eastern Cape. Her love for music started when she was in primary school. Nia says she found that she had a special attachment to music which felt like a sense of belonging and gave her a sense of pride. In high school, she was part of the school choir, participated in talent competitions and from there made sure she nurtured her talent and continued to work on it. After high school, Nia Pearl went on to study contemporary music at Damelin University and completed her studies in 2013. After Varsity she started building a career as Nia Pearl.
